The tender warm apples and blueberries, mixed with the crunchy topping make the apple blueberry crumble a dessert that never fails. Similar to this popular Apple Crisp that is a hit.
The crumble is made with GF all-purpose flour, buckwheat flour, and almond flour but feel free to use the GF flour you desire. You can replace the buckwheat flour.
This kind of dessert is perfect to share at a table with family and friends and serve it warm with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream.
Ingredients
The main ingredients of this recipe are:
- Apples: green medium Granny Smith apples.
- Gluten-Free Flour: GF all-purpose flour and buckwheat flour for the crumble. The buckwheat flour has an intense flavor.
- Almond flour: store-bought almond flour, but you can use homemade one.
- Butter: cold diced unsalted butter.
- Sugar: brown sugar for the crumble.
- Orange: fresh orange zest
- Blueberries: fresh blueberries are always the best, but frozen ones work perfectly well.
- Almonds: chopped and toasted almonds.
How to make GF Apple Blueberry Crumble
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Place the peeled, seeded, and cubed apples, the blueberries, and the orange zest in a baking pan. I used a glass baking dish oval. Set aside.
In a medium bowl mix the cold diced butter, brown sugar, and GF flour. Rub together with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs.
Sprinkle the crumble and the chopped toasted almonds over the apples.
Bake for 40 minutes or until golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
Served warm with a scoop of ice cream.
Storing
Store the dessert covered in the fridge for up to 3-4 days. Don´t recommend freezing it, it’s never the same, but if you freeze it, when you are ready to enjoy it warm it in the oven for 10 minutes or until the crumble takes consistency again.
Variations
- GF Flour: you can make the crumble only with GF all-purpose flour.
- Apples: You can use another variety of apples, such as golden, or use red apples, but keep in mind that they are sweeter.
- Blueberries: is an optional. You can not add them or replace them with mixed berries.
- Dried fruits: replace almonds with walnuts and change the flavor.
