This easy blueberry compote takes just 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes on the stovetop. It has juicy blueberries, fresh or frozen, and just enough sweetness, with a texture that's somewhere between a sauce and a chunky compote.
Place the blueberries, lemon juice, and sugar in a deep saucepan.
Cook over medium heat until the blueberries begin to release their juices and the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
Reduce the heat and simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Keep some of the blueberries whole rather than crushing them all, so the sauce has a chunky texture.
Remove from the heat when the sauce looks slightly thinner than you want it. It will thicken as it cools.
If the sauce is too thick, add a bit of water and continue simmering until it reaches the desired consistency.
Let the blueberry compote cool for a few minutes before serving.
Let the blueberry compote cool completely and transfer it to an airtight container or clean jar. Store it in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Notes
TIP: For a thicker sauce, mix 1 tablespoon cornstarch with 1 tablespoon cold water. Stir this mixture into the blueberries once they are simmering and cook for another 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly.
