Orange Creme Brulee

About this recipe

With five ingredients, that you probably have on hand, you can have a naturally gluten-free dessert that everyone loves. There are many versions of creme brulee: coffee, chocolate, caramel, and so on. In this case, is a citric recipe.

This creme brulee is rich and creamy and the addition of orange zest adds a citrusy flavor that complements perfectly the custard base.

It’s a super easy and quick dessert and it always makes you look good in a dinner. You can make the custard ahead of time and torch it before serving.

Ingredients

  • Eggs: room temperature eggs are better.
  • Sugar: white granulated sugar.
  • Cream: heavy cream. It’s better a high percentage of fat content.
  • Orange: fresh orange zest.

How to make Easy Orange Creme Brulee

In a medium bowl mix, without beating, the yolks, egg, and sugar.

In a small deep saucepan heat the cream and orange zest. Pour over the egg mixture and add the vanilla.

Sift the mixture and let chill for an hour in the refrigerator.

Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C).

Fill the ramekins with the mixture and cover with aluminum foil.

Cook for 40 minutes in a double boiler until the preparation is just soft in the center.

Remove from the oven, let cool, and place them covered in the fridge.

Before serving, sprinkle with sugar and use a blow torch to caramelize it. Hold the flame just above the sugar and keep moving it round and round until caramelized.

Serving suggestions

You can serve the creme brulee without any addition and it is very good. But if you want to top the dessert with something, here are some suggestions:

  • Whipped cream: fresh whipped cream.
  • Orange zest: sprinkle the creme brulee with fresh orange zest.

  • Gluten-free cookie: to scoop out the cream! I would choose a simple, basic cookie. A gingerbread cookie would be very good.

Recipe variations

There are many twists on creme brulee, chocolate, fruity, with coffee, etc. And they are all good! It’s a dessert that never bores because you can make a different version every time you are craving a creamy dessert.

If you love lemon, you can add fresh lemon zest instead of orange. If you replace the orange zest with vanilla extract, it’s a classic creme brulee recipe.

Storing

Store creme brulee covered in the fridge for up to 2 or 3 days. You can make it in advance, and then you only need to take the dessert out of the fridge, sprinkle it with sugar, and use a blow torch to caramelize it.
